THE TEXTILE WORKSHOP / 01

Treadle & Twill

A little loom. A whole language of cloth.

Your cloth

The commission

Match the dark warp-over cells. Amber outlines mark differences on your cloth.

Inside the loom

Each vertical yarn belongs to a shaft. A pedal lifts its tied shafts. Choose a pedal for each horizontal row.

1. Thread the vertical yarns

Tap a number to cycle its shaft 1–4.

2. Tie pedals to shafts

Tap a knot: filled = this pedal lifts this shaft.

3. Choose each row’s pedal

Tap a pedal number to cycle 1–4.

How to read the fabric

Dark vertical yarn is above the ivory horizontal yarn when a shaft lifts. Trace one amber mismatch back to its column’s shaft and its row’s pedal, then change that knot. A float is an uninterrupted run of one yarn on top; shorter floats usually snag less.

Study 1 starts with two wrong knots. Later studies also change threading and row pedals. Every commission can be solved; matching cloth counts even if you find a different valid draft.
